We're going to be doing a lot of hands-on classes this year and we've locked down our schedule until the end of May. You can sign up for a class through Facebook or by leaving a comment here. I'll be in contact shortly after to confirm your reservation. Most classes are small - only four to six folks - so I can give everyone the attention necessary but there are two events that are open to twelve to twenty. All classes are $25.00 for adults and free for children up to age 12 accompanied by an adult. Classes generally last all afternoon from noon to five pm. Reservations are required for the classes so I can get enough supplies for everyone. We love kids here at Windy Thistle and have a play room with toys for your kids. Some of our classes are specifically designed for kids. We'll be having two different cookie classes coming up, one is rolled & decorated cookies and the other is drop cookies because cooking with kids is just the best! And if your kid gets bored and tired of the class, they can go play. The playroom is right above our country kitchen, so they're never far away.
1/25/2020 BAKING BREAD
We'll be going over how to use yeast by baking white bread and no-knead bread loaves and also yeast dinner rolls. We'll go over all the techniques to make these breads from scratch. All participants will go home with loaves of bread and rolls to share with their own friends and family.
2/8/2020 VALENTINE SWEETHEARTS - kid friendly
We'll be making rolled sugar cookies from scratch and then we'll use different icing techniques to embellish the cookies as Valentine Gifts for friends and family. Everyone will go home with a dozen decorated cookies. Bring a child to share this experience with you! No cost for kids to participate.
2/22/2020 SEED STARTING
We'll make up potting soil, plant several types of seeds and discuss when to plant, how to harden off and how to baby them along until they are ready to go out in your garden. We'll be doing three herbs, three vegetables and three flowers. Everyone will go home with nine seeded pots to grow at home.
3/7/2020 SPRING CLEANING - HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN NON TOXIC CLEANERS DIY
We'll go over more natural cleaning supplies by making an all-purpose spray cleaner, powder style laundry soap, liquid laundry soap and a beeswax based furniture polish - and you will be able to pronounce the names of all the ingredients! You'll go home with the recipes and a sample of all of these cleaners to use on your own home.
3/21/2020 COOKIES AND KIDS
One child is a requirement - no cost for bringing more kids
We'll make three popular drop cookie recipes with your kids - Chocolate Chip, Peanut Butter, and Oatmeal Raisin. Everyone will go home with a child covered in sweet sugary goop and flour and really good cookies to share with friends and family. (if the kids don't eat them all fresh from the oven)
4/4/2020 MOTHER'S DAY CRAFTS WITH YOUR KIDS
We'll be making plaster molds of children's hands, mother's day cards and spring bouquets of tissue paper flowers to show mom how much they love you. Spend some time with your favorite fans and go home with homemade crafts designed by love. All supplies are included, kids are free but should wear old clothes - there may be Elmer's Glue and Glitter involved.
4/18/2020 LADIES LUNCHEON
You deserve a break and this is a lovely time of year to join us for a traditional luncheon, outside if the weather is nice and inside if it isn't. The menu will be announced a little later on - but will feature sandwiches, salad, teas, scones and other tasty goodies to spoil our guests! We'll play trivia with a prize for the winner and a door prize for attendance. A dozen ladies will be pampered so bring a friend!
5/2/2020 REPOTTING SEEDLINGS AND SETTING OUT STARTS
We'll repot seedlings and get them ready for the garden. We'll go over planting techniques, no till gardening, natural pesticides and herbicides, common pests and plant diseases. We'll discuss container gardens and how to progress when you don't have a lot of room. Everyone will go home with growing plants, ready for their gardens at home.
5/16/2020 COOKING OVER AN OPEN FIRE - BBQ DINNER EVENT
Everyone knows how to grill but usually only do meats. We'll go over a number of different ways to cook over a campfire using some different methods. Campouts will become a lot easier when you know how to harness those coals! Dinner will be provided, menu to come. Since this will be held outdoors, there will be no cap on attendees. Bring the whole family for this one! If we are rained out on the 16th, we'll hold the class on the 23rd instead.
Other classes will be added as time goes on and people ask to learn specific things. We'll make soap, make candles, process chickens, can and preserve foods, etc. Check back as we add more classes and events. Be sure to reserve your class - we need to know how many folks are coming! Every other week, something is going on at Windy Thistle!
